A sentimental platter

This project began with a friend’s social media post. They shared an image of a hand written recipe from their grandmother for their special Christmas plum pudding.

We got some high resolution images of the recipe and cleaned it up as best we could in photoshop.

After picking up some Claret Ash, we jointed it and glued it together to make the platter. The centre circle was routed out and it was ready for lasering.

We had ummed and ahhed about the design for the wording on the platter before settling on the ingredient list and some special wording from recipe.

Then it was into the laser for the engraving.

We chose to use the laser for this process for a couple of reasons.

The main one being that we wanted all of the words to be in the hand writing of the commissioner’s grandmother.

The second reason was that as the platter is intended for use with food, we didn’t want the writing to be engraved too deep, potentially trapping food.

We carefully put some resin the the top and bottom wording as these were engraved slightly deeper than the words in the circle.

For the finish on the platter, we used our handmade cutting board wax. This finish is a mix of beeswax and white oil and is food safe. This finished added a lovely sheen to the platter and really brought out the engraving.

Then it was onto delivering the platter to the commissioner. Just in time for their family Christmas in July.
